Linux Installation

How to install Snipset on Linux from the DEB package or the portable AppImage.

Snipset ships two official Linux artifacts, and either one gives you the same desktop application. Choose the DEB package on Debian or Ubuntu, and the portable AppImage everywhere else. This page covers installation and first launch. Day-to-day setup (Wayland key injection, global shortcuts, audio, speech) lives on the consolidated Linux setup page linked at the end.

System Requirements

  • OS: 64-bit Linux with a modern desktop environment such as KDE Plasma or GNOME.
  • Architecture: x64 only. ARM and ARM64 Linux builds are not published.
  • Display server: X11 and Wayland are both supported. Wayland needs one extra helper for text injection, described on the setup page.

Download

Snipset downloads are gated by your license code.

  1. Open the Snipset download page and enter your license code to unlock the download links.
  2. Pick the artifact that matches your distribution:
    • DEB package: snipset_<version>_amd64.deb for Debian, Ubuntu, Linux Mint, Pop!_OS, and other Debian-derived distributions.
    • AppImage: Snipset_<version>_amd64.AppImage, a portable single file that runs on most distributions without a system-wide install.

The same files are served by the updater endpoints /api/updater/deb and /api/updater/appimage, which the download page and the in-app updater both use. You normally do not call them by hand.

Install from the DEB Package

sudo apt install ./snipset_<version>_amd64.deb

The package declares the following runtime dependencies, and apt resolves them for you:

  • libwebkit2gtk-4.1-0
  • libxdo3
  • libayatana-appindicator3-1
  • xdotool

After installation, launch Snipset from your application menu. The DEB installs to the system and does not update itself; install a newer .deb to upgrade.

Run the AppImage

chmod +x Snipset_<version>_amd64.AppImage
./Snipset_<version>_amd64.AppImage

The AppImage bundles its own media framework and can update itself in place, but it still uses the system WebKitGTK 4.1. Install libwebkit2gtk-4.1-0 on Debian or Ubuntu, or the equivalent webkit2gtk-4.1 package on other distributions, before launching it for the first time.

Tip: desktop integration tools such as AppImageLauncher or GearLever can register the AppImage in your menu and keep it updated, so you do not have to run it from a terminal each time.

Arch Linux Note

On some Arch hosts, the WebKitGTK copy bundled inside the AppImage can break rendering and leave the window blank. The working install on those machines is the extracted application binary placed on the system, with the resource directory kept alongside it, rather than running the AppImage directly. If you see a blank window on Arch, work through the setup page below before reinstalling.

Next Steps

Wayland key injection with ydotool, global shortcuts through the desktop portal, audio, and text-to-speech are all covered on the consolidated Linux setup page: Linux setup.
